78th Golden Globe Awards nominations announced

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

78th Golden Globe Awards, nominationsSarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson were up bright and early to help reveal the nominees for the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards. The announcement began at 5:35 AM PT/8:35 AM ET on NBC's Today and via a live stream online. Did your favorite film and TV shows make the cut? Let's take a closer look!

On the film side, the Hollywood Foreign Press showed a lot of love to Promising Young Woman with Emerald Fennell landing a Best Director and a Best Screenplay nomination along with a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Drama, and Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Carey Mulligan. Regina King scored a Best Director nomination for One Night In Miami, even though the film missed the Best Motion Picture, Drama category. That being said, it's a huge honor for Regina King and makes her Oscar nomination chances that much better as she could make history as the first African American woman to be nominated for a Best Director Oscar. One Night In Miami also was acknowledged in the acting category with Leslie Odom Jr. landing a Best Supporting Actor nomination for the film.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom scored a posthumous nomination for Chadwick Boseman in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama category as well as a nod for Viola Davis in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama category as well. Boseman is quickly becoming the frontrunner this awards season in that particular category which would honor his very short legacy as an actor and performer. The Trial of the Chicago 7 also received multiple nominations including Best Motion Picture, Drama, Best Screenplay, and Best Director for Aaron Sorkin as well as Sacha Baron Cohen landing a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance in the film.

Sacha Baron Cohen was also acknowledged for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm with the movie earning a Best Picture, Musical, or Comedy nomination as well as Cohen receiving a nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. Maria Bakalova also continued her momentum this awards season with a Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy nomination for her hilarious turn in one of the most talked-about films of 2020.

The TV side had some surprising entries as well. Newcomers Emily In Paris and The Flight Attendant earned nominations for Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy, with HBO Max securing the first major award nomination of their relatively short time in the streaming game. Lily Collins and Kaley Cuoco also scored nominations for their roles on the show for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Schitt's Creek also made the cut for Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy after its epic Emmy winning night where it swept all the major categories. Catherine O' Hara and Eugene Levy also secured nominations for Schitt's Creek in the Best Actor and Actress in a Musical or Comedy category while Dan Levy and Annie Murphy showed in the supporting categories. Can they make it another clean sweep? It's very possible!

On the drama side for TV, Star Wars fans can celebrate that The Mandalorian secured a Best Television Series, Drama nomination, and in a bit of a surprising inclusion, Netflix's Cuckoo's Nest series, Ratched, also scored a nomination for Best Television Series, Drama. The Queen's Gambit, which has been a huge sensation for Netflix, was nominated for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television as well as Best Actress in that category for Anya Taylor-Joy. The actress is a double nominee as she scored a Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for her role in Emma. I also want to point out, as a huge fan, Ozark showed up to play with nominations in the Best Television Series, Drama category as well as Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner receiving nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series, Drama.

The virtual 78th annual Golden Globe Awards will be hosted by Golden Globe mainstays Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and are set for Sunday, February 28, 2021, on NBC. The ceremony will originate from both Los Angeles and New York, live coast-to-coast from 5-8 PM PT/8-11 PM ET. Check out the full list of nominees below!
