I had a good time watching the first season of the Netflix series The Witcher, and gave it an 8/10 review – so I'm glad to hear that the show is doing well and earning a fanbase. It's popular despite the fact that myself and a lot of other viewers had trouble keeping track of what events were occurring at which point in the timeline, since episodes would jump back and forth in time to follow different characters: "the witcher" Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), witch Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Princess Cirilla (Freya Allan).
Speaking with the folks at Games Radar, The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich assured viewers that the story will be "much more focused" in season 2.
There’s a stronger drive in the story, because all of the relationships that we’ve been setting up in season one, actually start to come into fruition in season two. Characters start meeting and interacting more. That goes well sometimes. It doesn’t go well sometimes. But it’s kind of like, all of those building blocks that we set up for the world, finally start to come together into something a little more concrete."
Hissrich was quoted in another interview that she has plotted out seven seasons for the show, but that's not a number we should hold her to. She told Cinema Blend,
It's funny, because I said in an interview that I could write seven seasons. I also said I'm sure later that day I could write twenty seasons if given the opportunity. I could keep writing the show for a very long time. As long as people are interested in it and as long the source material is there to organically build from."
The Witcher is based on a series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski that have also served as the inspiration for a Polish film and series, comic books, and video games.
Seven seasons of The Witcher does sound like it would be a good thing, but I have trouble getting my hopes up over the idea that the series could last for a long time on Netflix. They can be ruthless when it comes to cancelling shows, and this one looks like it's expensive to produce. I think we'll get a few seasons, but I'm not going to bet on seven or more.
