After he sets sail once more as Jack Sparrow in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5, and following him setting sail on the tracks for MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, Johnny Depp will set sail on the seas on life in the new movie he just signed to star in, RICHARD SAYS GOODBYE. Guy does a lot of different kinds of sailing.
Deadline got the exclusive that the actor will headline the small-scale feature from writer/director Wayne Roberts, and Depp’s involvement will surely make it one of the big ticket items when it’s shopped at Cannes this month. The film will be financed by IM Global, whose production head, Greg Shapiro (ZERO DARK THIRTY, THE HURT LOCKER) will produce alongside Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (LOVING, MIDNIGHT SPECIAL).
Depp will play a man named Richard, a college professor who is given a life-altering diagnosis and seeks to live life to the fullest in the craziest ways possible. Smoking, drinking, sexing, stealing, cursing at people – and all with a sharp sense of humor – Richard is finally getting the most out of his life in the most pleasurable ways. No release date is set for the movie, nor other cast members, but a late 2018 release could be in the cards.
The story sounds like one of those typical, feel-good, “live to max” kind of films that make for good “everything else is sold out” fare. But this sounds like it may have a more R-rated feel to it, and Depp’s involvement signs to something a bit more gonzo than a typical crowd-pleaser with a poster littered with rays of sunshine. I’m all for a drunk, cursing Johnny Depp, so maybe this movie itself will have some sold-out showings of its own. Guess that means you’re taking your Tinder date to a movie about a dog, you poor planner.
