Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle In Time casts Storm Reid in lead role

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

The more I hear about Ava DuVernay’s A WRINKLE IN TIME, the more I like it. I've loved the casting of Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which (Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, and Oprah Winfrey, respectively), and the casting continues to kill it. The main character of the novel, Meg Murry, is now going to be played my multi-racial actress Storm Reid (12 YEARS A SLAVE).

In A WRINKLE IN TIME, Meg Murry (Reid) is a smart, strong-willed girl who goes out to find her lost scientist father in another dimension, helped by a classmate, her genius younger brother, and three angelic figures named Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which.

This is great news! I love the idea of adding more diversity to the cast (already evident with the casting of Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling), as there is definitely a dearth of POC main characters in family films (not saying they don't exist, but that the ratio is definitely more than a little skewed, especially in big-budget fare). And with MOANA about Pacific-Islanders and QUEEN OF KATWE starring Lupita Nyong’o (who won't be covered in misguided motion-capture this time), it looks like Disney is doing a great job of adding more diversity to their slate (which isn't entirely new, but it's good to see that it's continuing).

So you guys excited for this adaptation?
