Samurai Jack will return to television with a new season on Adult Swim

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Genndy Tartakovsky’s wonderful series Samurai Jack followed Jack, a time-displaced samurai who sought to travel back in time and defeat the tyrannical demon known as Aku. The series was known for its beautiful and stylized animation style which offered up some amazing cinematic fight sequences inspired by Samurai films. Samurai Jack premiered in 2001 and lasted for 4 seasons and since its cancellation, there have been frequent discussions of a Samurai Jack film, but now it appears that Samurai Jack will be making his return to television.

Adult Swim has announced that Genndy Tartakovsky will continue the epic story of Samurai Jack with a new season that will premiere on Adult Swim’s Toonami block in 2016. Check out the brief teaser below.

Phil LaMarr gave voice to Jack's minimal dialogue in the original series and I would imagine that he'll be returning in this new season, but unfortunately Mako Iwamatsu, who voiced the demon Aku, has since passed on. As the teaser seems to indicate that Aku will return in some form, I can't help but wonder who they can get to replicate Iwamatsu's delightfully over-the-top voice acting.

Are you pleased that Samurai Jack will return to television or were you holding out hope for a movie?
