Rumor: Angelina Jolie under consideration to direct Captain Marvel

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

With Patty Jenkins stepping in as director on DC's WONDER WOMAN movie, Marvel may be in contention to nab Angelina Jolie to direct CAPTAIN MARVEL. That's right, Jolie will go from kicking ass on screen to potentially directing a kick ass woman. Collider originally reported sources saying Jolie was a frontrunner for both WONDER WOMAN and CAPTAIN MARVEL. Either project would have benefited from having her behind the camera, purely from a publicity standpoint. The question is whether she would really take the job.

To date, Angelina Jolie's directorial efforts have been passion projects rather than studio assignments. She first helmed IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY, which she also wrote, followed by last year's UNBROKEN. She showed she has chops behind the camera but decided to make her next film the smaller BY THE SEA starring herself and Brad Pitt. She has been working on getting the true life tale AFRICA made with Pitt once again in a starring role. The film would be about Richard Leakey and his fight against elephant poaching, but has hit recent snags with financing.

CAPTAIN MARVEL is a major project for Marvel Studios as it would be their first solo film for a female superhero. There is, unfortunately, a short list of female directors to pull from who have experience with projects of this scope. Jolie would definitely have her hands full but it could also cement her with an opportunity to get more passion projects greenlit by major studios if she pulls it off.

A decision does not need to be made immediately, but expect this to come together sooner rather than later. CAPTAIN MARVEL is slated to open on November 2, 2018.
