Update: Did Kevin Smith write a Batman v Superman script to throw us off?

UPDATE: Kevin Smith has taken to his website to refute the story that he wrote a fake BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE screenplay to mess with fans. Looks like whatever script is floating around online is a fake by someone else or possibly the real deal.

Kevin Smith is all over the Internet this week with news regarding his set visit to J.J. Abrams‘ STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, his own film projects, and the rumor that he may have had something to do with all of the BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE tidbits we have been hearing about. In fact, according to a source within Warner Bros, the studio was all aboard this subterfuge.

MovieWeb posted a letter explaining exactly what Warner Bros and Kevin Smith have done and, if true, this may be the most ambitious plan to throw the online community off of spoilers that we have ever seen. Here is a brief excerpt from the letter.

Late last year both Charles Roven and Zack Snyder approached Kevin Smith with a early treatment for the film and It was Kevin Smith who came up with the idea to write an entire screenplay based on it but with several huge red herrings and changes which do not appear in the final film. These include plot points and characters etc etc. and ‘leak’ it online.

The source claims to be directly involved with the leaking of the screenplay to movie websites and blogs with the express purpose to throw fans off the scent of what is coming in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and JUSTICE LEAGUE. This also means that we can probably discount almost anything we have heard so far regarding the film outside of set photos and official news from the studio. To be honest, this kind of makes sense. Kevin Smith has a long history of comic book fandom and a direct connection with star Ben Affleck. He even wrote a screenplay for a Superman movie that never happened. So, if anyone could confuse fans with rumors and plot points that were close enough to reality, it would be Smith.

As a fan, I have to applaud this move by Snyder, Smith, and Warner Bros. Or, could this be a massive redirect to make us think that everything we have learned is not true even though it may end up being in the film? If that is the case and the studio is trying to pull a Khan on us, I will be pissed. If this was all part of the plan, I will respect them for the bold move.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
