Chronicle director Josh Trank to helm stand-alone Star Wars movie!

Word on the street is that the release schedule of Star Wars films over the next several years basically equated to one Star Wars film per year.  Of course, we have STAR WARS: EPISODE VII coming December 18, 2015, followed by a stand-alone film before EPISODE VIII is released, and then followed by another stand-alone film.  Well, with new Star Wars films comes director announcements, and know we have a third name to add alongside J.J. Abrams and Gareth Edwards.

Josh Trank made a hell of a feature-film directorial debut with CHRONICLE, which no doubt led him directly to the FANTASTIC FOUR reboot currently in production. I’d say having him attached to a FANTASTIC FOUR sequel (which was rumored) is probably a no-go at this time, now that he will helm his own Star Wars film. Given the recent announcement that Gareth Edwards would be directing a spin-off set for a December 16, 2016 release date, I think it’s safe to assume Trank’s Star Wars flick will hit sometime in 2018 (after the 2017 release of EPISODE VIII). 

If this leaked release schedule is any indication, that would mean that Gareth Edwards would helm a Boba Fett movie, while Trank tackles a Han Solo flick.  Perhaps given his penchant for coming-of-age tales, that makes sense, as they’re likely to focus on Han in his far younger days (no disrespect, Ford).  Before all this hoopla started about Star Wars films, back when Disney first purchased Lucasfilm, I was worried about over-saturation.  I still am, to a degree.  I’d also be lying if I said that each and every announcement didn’t have me excited.  It’s a good time to be a Star Wars fan.

The first in this re-emergence of Star Wars films, EPISODE VII, will hit theaters December 18, 2015.
