Joaquin Phoenix to star in Woody Allen’s next film

Woody Allen, even at the age of 78, is not slowing down. With his next film, MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT, slated to hit theaters this summer, Allen is already planning his next film. No details exist regarding the plot of the movie but Deadline reports that Joaquin Phoenix will star in it.

Phoenix is coming off a pair of critically acclaimed performances in Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER and last year’s HER while Allen is prepping his tenth film in the last decade, excluding short films and acting roles like in John Turturro‘s FADING GIGOLO. MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT follows Allen’s critically acclaimed BLUE JASMINE which garnered Cate Blanchett and Oscar. Could this pairing lead to Joaquin Phoenix nabbing an Academy Award?

While Woody Allen‘s output has been very hit or miss over the last few decades, the last few dramatic films he has made (MATCH POINT, CASSANDRA’S DREAM, and VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA) have been some of the best of his career. I am sure Phoenix would do a great job in any genre for Allen, but I am crossing my fingers we get a serious role.

MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT will hit theaters July 25th.
