There’s been both excitement and disdain for director Harmony Korine‘s upcoming SPRING BREAKERS, a tale of debauchery, violence, and twerking to Skrillex, but I think some of that may be misguided. Having not yet seen it, I get the feeling that it will be part parody with a heavy dose of cautionary tale fantasy as nothing about it screams “take me seriously, please!” Ultimately, it looks like a fun, wild, and probably dark tale that is consistent with the type of material the writer of GUMMO and KIDS would produce. And with that, I’m in. Also, bikinis. Lots and lots of bikinis.
Today, we have two new behind-the-scenes featurettes that show Corine on set with his leading ladies and leading gangsta, Alien, played by the enigmatic James Franco. Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine seem positively bubbly and enjoying the shit out of their paid vacation, including trips to the strip club, grinding on the beach, and generally living the high life while basking in the sun with semi-automatic weapons.

I’m beyond stoked to see this. I love whacked-out, crazy films like this for the same reason that I like stuff like Park Chan-wook’s STOKER: It’s not your average fare. It’s good to have films like that to balance out the palate.
SPRING BREAKERS is set to get down on March 22, 2013.
