How many of you thought you would live to see a film where Michael Douglas and Matt Damon share a romantic kiss? I can honestly say I never saw that coming. But, when Steven Soderbergh is directing, anything can happen.
That image above shows Michael Douglas in full costume as Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover, Scott Thorson. The two were together for a long time and Soderbergh’s film will be based on Thorson’s autobiographical novel. Liberace met the 17 year old Thorson when he was the singer’s chauffeur. Their relationship ended abruptly and resulted in Thorson famously suing Liberace for palimony.
Liberace’s sexuality was called into question throughout his life. Many did not know that he was homosexual due to his relationships with several famous women including Mae West. It was not until 2011 that Betty White confirmed he was in fact gay and that she acted as his beard on several occasions (Why is it always Betty White??).
BEHIND THE CANDELABRA is currently filming in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Palm Springs and will air on HBO in 2013.
