Will the X-Men First Class sequel story involve Days of Future Past?

JoBloJoBlo

With Matthew Vaughn currently prepping his sequel to the succesful X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, there has been next to no information about the story or characters, other than that it will feature Magneto (Michael Fassbender) prominently and that Jennifer Lawrence will return as Mystique.  The rest is up in the air.

It seems that FOX has registered the title “Days of Future Past” with the MPAA Title Registration Bureau, which “exists for studios and productions companies to stake their claims on certain titles that they intend to release and distribute, so that others can stray from using a similar title.”

So, why does this matter?

Well, there’s a number of things that are of interest if FOX and Vaughn are pursuing this particular storyline.  For one, the story’s two main characters in the comics are Wolverine and Kitty Pride.  Two, there are sentinals.  And three, time travel and alternate universes.  Ultimately, it’s a really cool story and an exceptionally ambitious one if they’re actually pursuing this direction.  It’s likely they’re just going to tear it up to fit what they have to work with, but still…

…could Vaughn have an ace up his sleeve?  Is it possible that we could see Wolverine in the sequel?  Or, the famed Sentinels?  Ahh, the speculation…

Here’s the comic book story breakdown:

The storyline alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps. The present-day X-Men are forewarned of the possible future by a future version of their teammate Kitty Pryde, whose mind traveled back in time and possessed her younger self to warn the X-Men. She succeeds in her mission and returns to the future, but despite her success, the future timeline still exists as an alternative timeline rather than as the actual future.

The untitled sequel to X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is set to open July 18, 2014.  So, y’know, we have a while.
