With actor Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn gathering plenty of critical attention for their action-drama DRIVE, we’re wondering what they can do with their next collaboration.
The duo are updating LOGAN’S RUN, the sci-fi novel previously adapted as a cheesy 1976 movie with Michael York and AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON babe Jenny Agutter.
And no one is more aware of that pungent cheese odor than Gosling. When asked if their version would draw influence from the first movie, the actor tells flixist: “No, because it’s so different from our idea for LOGAN’S and we want to go back more to the book. Also, we have other ideas. And that film was shot in a mall in the 70s. I can’t see how it would influence us. I’ve been really enjoying the process of developing it. We’re focusing on that. We’re trying to create this world and make a movie we want to see, like we did with DRIVE.“
LOGAN’S RUN (based on a 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson) was set in a futuristic society where gem-palmed citizens willingly die at a certain age (21 in the book, 30 in the movie) as a means of population control. Logan is a “Sandman”, a law officer sent to hunt humans who escape the city to continue existing after their designated death day, and while on the hunt he ultimately discovers reasons to keep living.
Bryan Singer, Carl Rinsch (47 RONIN) and Joseph Kosinski (TRON LEGACY) have all been attached to direct during the project’s lengthy development.
