Restrepo director killed in Libya mortar attack

Sad news today as global news collides with the world of entertainment. Co-director of the Oscar nominated war documentary RESTREPO, Tim Hetherington (pictured right)  has been killed today in Libya.

Confirmed reports are now coming in that he was killed in a mortar attack when he was there to document the historic war, as he did in Afghanistan for his previous film. His last tweet:

In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO.

Critically wounded and possibly dead in the same attack is photojournalist Chris Hondros, but those reports aren’t yet confirmed.

A tragic loss, and a reminder that the life of a documentarian is incredibly dangerous, and people like Hetherington risk their lives to get us stories we wouldn’t otherwise see.
