First it was David Fincher directed a movie about Facebook and now Ridley Scott is working on a YouTube movie? To be fair, Fincher’s THE SOCIAL NETWORK is a narrative feature film based around the creation of Facebook. Scott’s proposed “YouTube project” is titled LIFE IN A DAY and is planned as a documentary that will be incorporated entirely from footage shot and uploaded by YouTube users.
Kevin Macdonald (THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND) will direct the documentary and will, along with Scott’s assistance, select the best footage uploaded on July 24, 2010. The users whose videos are inserted into the film will be credited as co-directors and 20 of them will be flown to the premiere at next year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Macdonald said that he hopes the documentary is something of a “time capsule that will tell future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010.” If you’re slightly worried that the documentary will paint a lilywhite portrait of the world, Macdonald and Scott have teamed with Against All Odds, an organization that helps execute large-scale projects, to distribute cameras to individuals in remote regions of the world.
