Ian McShane to play Blackbeard in the next Pirates installment?

Another matey is in negotiations to star in PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES.

That swashbuckler is none other than Ian McShane, who was most recently in 44 INCH CHEST. McShane is in negotiations to play the villainous pirate, Blackbeard.

The newest PIRATES film is being directed by Rob Marshall (CHICAGO, NINE) and is about the tale of the fountain of youth, something I’m more than sure Jack Sparrow would be interested in. The sexy Penelope Cruz is also in talks to join the cast as well. No word yet on what role she might be playing. Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot penned the script. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing.

I think the progression of McShane going from brothel owner in DEADWOOD to Blackbeard is quite fitting. Blackbeard, also known as Edward Teach/Thatch, helmed Queen Anne’s Revenge. He was known as one of the most notorious and feared pirates; most say because of his appearance. I’m not up to date on my Blackbeard knowledge, but apparently most of his life was romanticized after his death.
