Universal is moving ahead at Universal after the original film’s co-writer Chris Morgan submitted a story treatment. Now the studio has formally hired a screenwriter to flesh out the concept and they found a writer in the oddest place: POOH’S HEFFALUMP MOVIE. Uni has hired Evan Spiliotopoulos whose writing credits to date include the aforementioned HEFFALUMP movie, it’s Halloween-inspired sequel, LION KING 1 1/2 and THE LITTLE MERMAID 3. Spiliotopoulos came to the recognition of Universal not because Maddox Jolie is a huge HEFFALUMP fan but because he submitted a non-Disney sequel script, THE LAST CALL, in development at the studio.
Timur Bekmambetov, who directed the original film, is producing the sequel and is attached to direct but hasn’t yet signed a deal. Without giving away a good portion of the original, it’s expected that WANTED will be a prequel.
