Del Toro’s Pinocchio

JoBloJoBlo

Guillermo Del Toro is one of the busiest men in Hollywood these days, with his duties as writer/director for THE HOBBIT and its sequel set to occupy the next 5 years of his life. It’s a wonder then, that he has time to co-write and executive produce a stop motion feature of the “Pinocchio” tale. Although he will not direct the film (for shame!) he will be heavily involved in its production and has said that it will take at least 3 years to complete.

Set to direct are Gris Grimly, who illustrated a 2002 version of “Pinocchio” and Adam Parrish King. Grimly is also writing the script with Del Toro. From my point of view, being a guy who cuts his toe nails and considers it a productive day, I can’t help but be impressed by Del Toro’s work ethic. The man also has a take on “Frankenstein”, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and “Slaughterhouse V” in the works. A slacker he is not–super jealous I def am.

Man, that Guillermo del Toro has a spectacular work ethic. Besides THE HOBBIT(S), which will keep him occupied for the next four years, they guy keeps getting involved in enough projects to keep him busy until he’s a senior citizen (more than a dozen and counting). Good for us, even if the waiting sucks.

His latest is a new version of the fairy tale PINOCCHIO, which he’ll develop and executive produce for artist/filmmaker Gris Grimly (a better name I’ve not heard today) and co-director Adam Parrish King. The Jim Henson Co. is behind the stop-motion animated movie, with designs based on Grimly’s 2002 illustrated childrens book.

Unsurprising for a del Toro project, the intent is to make a dark and twisted variation on the classic tale (could it be creepier than the Roberto Benigni live-action version?) about a wooden puppet who dreams of becoming a real boy, only to find a few hard lessons to learn.
