Guy Ritchie’s upcoming film ROCKNROLLA is set for release this October from Warner Bros. So why was uber-producer Joel Silver screening the movie for executives at Sony and Lionsgate? It turns out that Warner Bros., stuffed with too many films than it can release due to the consolidation of New Line and Warner Independent, is shopping a number of films around hoping to cut some fat. While Warner’s head Alan Horn says ROCKNROLLA is “funny in spots,” he qualifies, “it’s very English,” adding, “I don’t think it’s broadly commercial.” ROCKNROLLA is just one of a handful of films Warner Bros. is either actively shopping or entertaining offers on including Danny Boyle’s SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and the Ed Norton/Colin Farrell starrer PRIDE AND GLORY. While the studio would like to rid its schedule of some of these movies, HOrn is quick to add they won’t be simply giving them away. If a deal can’t be made with an outside studio for ROCKNROLLA, Warner Bros. plans to honor its original deal for an 800-theater release (though Horn says they would “not be willing to spend the marketing money” on the film). If nothing changes, ROCKNROLLA, which stars Gerard Butler, Jeremy Piven, Thandie Newton and Ludacris, is set for release on Halloween (opposite ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO).
