Mirren Gaza Strips

I hardly expected Helen Mirren to follow up her Oscar winning performance in THE QUEEN with a supporting role in the cash cow NATIONAL TREASURE 2, but that seems to be the chosen course for many Oscar winners these days. Any day now Forest Whitaker will sign on to play the next Peter Parker. You take my word for it.

It looks like however, that Mirren is returning to the realm of the prestigious with GAZA, a story set in the troubled Gaza Strip region. The Times Online is reporting that Mirren will play one of the last Jewish women left in Gaza while her journalist daughter is in a relationship with a Palestinian and is shot and killed. Frank Deasy and Phillip Martin, the writing and directing team behind the final part of Mirren’s acclaimed miniseries PRIME SUSPECT are behind this one, although following the kidnapping of a BBC correspondent, the region was too dangerous for them to continue research. The nearby country of Jordan will be doubling for Gaza.
