I grew up on the muffled sounds of Nine Inch Nails industrial clang blasting through the walls of my depressed brother’s room, and soon enough I learned to love them myself. Now I count them as one of my favourite bands, which is why I get all riled up when I hear that NIN mastermind Trent Reznor is considering turning his latest concept album YEAR ZERO into a film. Reznor tells the Australia Herald-Sun:
“But some interesting things have come up in terms of turning this into another format of entertainment, like a television show or a movie. I’ve had some meetings with A-list people I’m interested in possibly working with.”
A-list people, eh? He’s already worked with a number of talented directors on music videos, including Mark Romanek (ONE HOUR PHOTO) and David Fincher, who I could easily see working with Reznor on a visual adaptation of his work. YEAR ZERO is essentially the story of a future-world run by a dictator state where the end of the world is nigh, with many interpreting it as a shot at the Bush administration and the way things are headed. With his videos, footage-based live shows, and vivd lyrics, Reznor has always been a visual musician, so a jump to film seems natural to me. Go for it, dude.
