Back when INDIANA JONES (AND THE CITY OF GOD??) was first announced, director Frank Darabont (THE SHAWSHANK
REDEMPTION) was commissioned to write the script. Then toxic speculation cloud enveloped the whole process, with rumours
of rewrites and an unhappy George Lucas. Darabont was then promptly dismissed and an entire reworking of the script was planned (David Koepp (WAR OF THE WORLDS) ended up writing the final draft).
Now with the whole broo-haha over the INDY 4 script process over and done with and the movie scheduled to start shooting this June, Darabont is free to speak about what went wrong, and speak he does with a tongue of venom and fire. In a recent interview with MTV.com to promote his upcoming Stephen King adaptation THE MIST, Darabont was asked about his experience of writing INDY 4, and here’s um, what he had to say:
It showed me how badly things can go. I spent a year of very determined effort on something I was very excited about, working very closely with Steven Spielberg and coming up with a result that I and he felt was terrific. He wanted to direct it as his next movie, and then suddenly the whole thing goes down in flames because George Lucas doesn’t like the script.
Ya. He said that. He also went on to describe it as ‘a waste of a year’ and a ‘tremendous disappointment. And it doesn’t stop there. He also refers to Lucas as ‘the most stubborn man I know.’ It truly, actually, and authentically does not end there.
