One of my most anticipated movies of next year is the music biopic spoof WALK HARD, starring John C. Reilly as Dewey Cox, a hybrid of such R n’ R giants as Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison. Judd Apatow co-wrote the script, and people like Jenna Fischer (The Office) and David Koechner (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy) round out the cast. And as if rumours of cameos by Will Ferrell and Jack Black weren’t enough, now comes official word that Jack White, brother (and ex-husband?) of Meg, and frontman of the White Stripes, will be swiveling his hips and gorging his pills onscreen as none other than Elvis Presley. I’m having trouble imagining White as Elvis, but I don’t think physical resemblance has anything to do with this casting decision.
This movie, with its pedigree of cliquey jokesters and scenesters, should be considered as an entry into the so-called Frat Pack’s canon of cinematic achievments, and if there is one thing these movies do exceptionally well, it’s the cameo. And I don’t know about you guys, but I’m a huge, huge fan of the cameo. So good for you Jack White on getting in on that shite, because cameos are the new leads. There, I said it.
