It takes a monster to defeat a monster in the final trailer for The Mummy

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

We're just three weeks away from the release of Universal's latest reboot of THE MUMMY and the beginning of a "dark universe" – a new cinematic universe that will be inhabited by modern versions of various classic Universal monsters and madmen like the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein's Monster and his Bride, the Invisible Man, the Wolf Man, etc. With the introduction to this universe fast approaching, the final trailer for THE MUMMY has been released online and can be seen below.

This trailer features much of the same elements we've seen before – glimpses of the big airplane action sequence, the Mummy's back story, the Mummy wreaking sandy havoc in London, Russell Crowe being cryptic as Dr. Henry Jekyll, the head of an organization called Prodigium, which exists to "recognize, examine, contain, and destroy evil". In the midst of the familiar, it delves a little deeper into the fact that the film's hero, played by Tom Cruise, has had some kind of curse placed on him. One that may be turning him into a monster himself.

This trailer also makes it clear that THE MUMMY is going to have a sense of humor. There may not be as much humor as there was in the previous MUMMY series, but there will definitely be some lines intended to get a laugh.

Directed by Alex Kurtzman from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, THE MUMMY has the following synopsis:

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The cast includes Cruise, Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari, Javier Botet, Sofia Boutella as the Mummy, and Crowe as both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

THE MUMMY will usher viewers into a new world of gods and monsters on June 9th.
