Richard Kelly and Nic Cage? Boy oh boy the possibilities!

Variety has reported that Richard Kelly (DONNIE DARKO, THE BOX) has ditched the previously announced CORPUS CHRISTIE in order to write, direct and produce an adaptation of real life crime story he’s titled AMICUS. Cage is attached to star as a lawyer in the film. Darko Entertainment will produce along with Laura Bickford (TRAFFIC) and Mike Nilon.

Set for a January start in Atlanta – AMICUS spans 25 years, based on the true story of Lawrence Horn, a former record producer and Motown Records exec who is currently serving a life sentence in prison for hiring Detroit-based hit man James Perry to murder his wife, quadriplegic son and the wealthy family’s overnight nurse at their suburban home in Silver Spring, Maryland. Horn’s son was the victim of medical malpractice and as the result of a subsequent lawsuit, had a trust worth nearly $2 million, which his father stood to inherit in the wake of his death.

Pretty intense, ay? Not sure how sensational Kelly will choose to treat the mass-murder, or if it’ll be more of a courtroom procedural in the aftermath. Still, Cage and Kelly? With such a dastardly crime at the center? I kind of like it. You?

Thing is, neither Kelly nor Cage has particularly impressed as of late.  Cage does have a dozen movies in the works, I doubt he’ll ever be out of work.  On the other hand, Kelly hasn’t directed a flick since 2009.  Seems a strange comb of a workaholic and straggler.  Interesting…
