We may now know who will strap on the metal to protect Old Detroit…

According to Deadline.com, MGM has officially made an offer to Joel Kinnaman to be their Alex Murphy in Jose Padihla’s ROBOCOP remake, which was penned by Josh Zutumer.

Kinnaman has really burst onto the scene recently, showing up next to Denzel in SAFE HOUSE, battling aliens in THE DARKEST HOUR and being shady in the AMC series “The Killing”, in which he’s one of the main characters. His breakout role was in 2010’s SNABBA CASH, which the Weinstein Company will be releasing in the U.S. this summer.

While this casting isn’t set in stone – it’s just an offer at the moment – do you think this guy is going to turn down what would certainly be the biggest role of his career thus far? I suppose we’ll find out if he accepts it soon.

Here’s the original ROBOCOP’s synopsis: When a good cop gets blown away by some ruthless criminals, innovative scientists and doctors are able to piece him back together as an unstoppable crime-fighting cyborg called “Robocop.”Impervious to bullets and bombs, and equipped with high-tech weaponry, Robocop quickly makes a namefor himself by cleaning up the crime-ridden streets of violence-ravaged Detroit. But despite his new, hardened exterior, Robocop is tormented by scraps of memory of his former life, and relives vividnightmares of his own death at the hands of the vicious killers. Now he is out to seek more than justice…he wants revenge!
