Robert Zemeckis set to make spooky “period Ghostbusters” in Charles Fort

Looks like Bob Zemeckis is really getting back into the live-action game. And lucky for us, after FLIGHT, dude’s going genre!

THR reports that Zemeckis has just struck a first-look deal with Universal to adapt Dark Horse comic CHARLES FORT to the big-screen. Word is Evan Spiliotopoulos (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN) will adapt the comic to script form. This will be the inaugural film under Zemeckis’ new production wing, Imagemovers,though whether or not he directs is unsure.

Dubbed by some close to the project as a “period Ghostbusters”, CHARLES FORT will center on the real life man who was an early-twentieth-century American researcher and writer whose focus was “anomalous phenomena” and the unexplained. Books Fort wrote such as The Book of the Damned (1919) and New Lands (1923) were some of the first to explore everything from levitation and teleportation to alien abduction and other paranormal pursuits. Fort was essentially a curious skeptic who enjoyed collecting data to support explanations for things that he felt were no less possible than the scientifically accepted ones.

The four-part Dark Horse comic published in 2002, “Fort: Prophet for the Unexplained,” chronicled Fort as a paranormal investigator who had frequent run-ins with aliens and otherworldly beings. My guess is Zemeckis will incorporate these issues with the larger story of Fort’s life, to bring us something potentially special. Remember, this dude cut his teeth in genre (“Tales from the Crypt”), so he may just be as itchy to get back as we are for him to.
