I don’t think this weekend’s box office numbers are going to surprise anyone. The East Coast had to deal with that crazy hurricane Irene, and well such an event would basically put a stopper on ones weekend plans. So what happened to our genre films this weekend? The news is not good …
This weeks big genre release was the Guillermo del Toro produced remake DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK. The flick cost around $25 M, and it brought in just over a quarter of that. Yes, the flick couldn’t even make back half of its budget on its opening weekend. It landed itself in #3 spot on the charts, with THE HELP coming in at #1 once again.
The #2 spot went to the Zoe Saldana actioner COLOMBIANA, and that made just over $10 M. Last weeks genre flicks CONAN THE BARBARIAN and FRIGHT NIGHT are still just in the Top 10 coming in at #8 and #9 respectively. Will the first week of September bring in some hope for the genre films? We’ve got SHARK NIGHT 3D and APOLLO 18 opening, will one of those knock the help off its mountain?
