While the new HARRY POTTER flick unsurprisingly took the #1 spot – in fact, it had the highest opening weekend ever with $168.5 million – Michael Bay’s TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON held on strong to the #2 position. It made $21 million, bringing its 3-week total gross over the $300 million mark – making it the first film of 2011 to do so.
J.J. Abrams’ SUPER 8 brought in around $2 million to claim the #9 spot. With a 60% drop off, this will likely be its last week in the Top 10. Beyond that, Matthew Vaughn’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS made another $625,000 for the #15 spot.
Next week we’ll see how Joe Johnston’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER opens against HARRY POTTER’s second weekend. Mike Cahill’s sci-fi/drama ANOTHER EARTH also opens in New York and Los Angeles.
