Javier Bardem officially offered the lead in The Dark Tower, how close to signing?

Since Deadline is usually far more credible than the NY Post, we’re gonna have to go ahead and call the story we ran earlier – about Christian Bale being wanted for the lead in Ron Howard’s lofty THE DARK TOWER adaptation – straight up bullshite!

Why? New dime has been dropped that Javier Bardem – who mentioned as a possible starrer sometime ago – has been officially offered the badass lead of Roland Deschain. Ron Howard and Universal made the offer, and while nothing has begun deal wise, the powers that be are said to feel pretty good about finding their man.

But remember, this isn’t just a one film stay for a character like Deschain. Howard and company have conceived a three-part film series, with a limited run TV show in between. Quite a commitment for whoever signs on. This will no doubt factor into Bardem’s decision…as will his newly born baby with Penelope Cruz. Kids ain’t cheap, and THE DARK TOWER has gotta be a primetime payday!

Back to you guys and girls though. Those familiar with THE DARK TOWER, how right (or wrong) is Bardem for the part? Would you rather see Christian Bale or Viggo Mortensen in the role?
