I’m not really feeling the Anthony Hopkins possession thriller THE RITE at the moment. Kind of looks like every other exorcism tale that rolls our way every year. I do love Anthony Hopkins though; the man classes up almost every production he’s in, no matter how dismal. (See: THE WOLFMAN.)
In any event, THE RITE has finally unearthed a rating from the MPAA, and unsurprisingly, it’s PG-13. Said rating is for disturbing thematic material, violence, frightening images and language including sexual references.
So the usual jump scares and bloodless spurts of violence… I just hope it’s not Anthony Hopkins making the sexual references. That would be awkward.
Inspired by true events, “The Rite” follows skeptical seminary student Michael
Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in
Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who introduces him to
the darker side of his faith.
THE RITE opens on JANUARY 28th.
