The other day I mentioned how 28 MONTHS LATER is one of those movies we’re always being teased with… Well, THE X-FILES 3 is another one. Every few months someone will mention how everything is coming together, or, short of that, how everybody wants to make it, if the timing and writing is right…
David Duchovney is usually the one leading this charge. He’s aware of how lame the last movie is and certainly appears to be willing to make up for that mistake. In November he claimed the third film was already in the process of being written; in a new interview with Showbiz Spy, he doesn’t go quite that far, but he is definitely beating the drum for another entry.
“I’m always game. It always rides on Fox. [Chris Carter] is game. I know [Gillian Anderson] is game. We all, at this point, love the show. We all, at this point, would love to work with one another again. We’re all good friends and miss one another, and miss working together.
“We worked together so hard for so long, so closely. We had some ups and downs personally, sure. But in the end, they are really like family to me. We’re all like this little X-Files family and I, for one, would love to continue. And I think there’s a lot left in the show. You know? And I think we can continue to make good movies.
“It’s just a matter of spending enough on a movie that can compete in the summertime. We made a movie and released it in the summer, but it wasn’t really a blockbuster movie. And it got kind of overshadowed by the bigger ones. So, we’re saying, make us big. We’ll fight with the big boys.”
I must agree with that last sentiment. The second film just felt too small and inconsequential, in addition to not doing what the X-Files always did best, which was stir our fears and make us believe in the fantastic. If they get back to the size and scope of the series – especially in its early, best years – they can still hit a home run.
