Fincher on genre projects: 20,000 Leagues 3D, Dragon Tattoo, Rendezvous with Rama

It looks like David Fincher’s THE SOCIAL NETWORK has as good a chance as any to win Best Picture of the Year. You think it’ll happen?

Oscar predictions aside, we know Fincher has more than a full plate right now…what with being in the dead of awards season whirlwind, currently filming THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO in Sweden and developing another handful of follow up projects. Dude’s backlogged!

Well, good ol’ Frosty of Collider got a few nuggets of info out of the SE7EN and FIGHT CLUB director, and it looks like his next film as a director will indeed be 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. Not only that, Fincher confirmed it’ll be his first 3D movie!

And while that’s certainly worth keeping tabs on, what may even be more interesting is a project he’s eyeing with Morgan Freeman, who has been trying to get the film made for many years. The project is an Arthur C. Clarke adaptation of RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA, “a great story that has an amazing role for Morgan Freeman who is an amazing actor and would be amazing in this thing,” says Fincher. He continues:

“The question was can we get a script that’s worthy of Morgan and can we get a script that is worthy of Arthur Clark [the author] and can we do all of that in an envelope that will allow the movie to take the kinds of chances that it wants to take. ‘Cuz we want to make a movie where kids go out of the theatre and instead of buying an action figure they buy a telescope. That was the hope. The hope is, let’s get people interested in the fucking movie. So there have been people that have been interested in this idea and we have never been able to get a script.”

Fincher also briefly touched on his newest film, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO redo, which he is going to great lengths to keep from becoming anachronistic. His plan is to, since the film takes place in 2003-2005 (roughly), is to eschew all the iPhone app. technology (since it was introduced in ’07) and keep the film as time-accurate as possible.

But really, it’s all about that RENDEZVOUS story, right? Why the hell can’t anyone get that script figured out? If Morgan Freeman can’t get that bastard fast-tracked, who the hell can? James Franco?
