Who knew Texans were so thin skinned?
After portraying the Lone Star State in a not so positive light, the Texas Film Commission is refusing to pay producers of Robert Rodriguez’s MACHETE for filming in their land. Under a state law that can permit such an action if, indeed, the film’s “content portrays Texas or Texans in a negative fashion,” Rodriguez and company are out a cool $1.75 million. And you know what? Mr. Machete is f*ckin’ pissed!
Specifically addressing the issue while promoting DEATH RACE 2, star Danny Trejo took serious umbrage with the TFC’s decision. Here’s what he told THR:
“It’s going back on your word. And that’s not Texan. (It) threw me for a loop. I’m kind of hurt.”
When asked if he particularly thought the film painted Texas in an unflattering light, Trejo continued:
“I think the way (the Texas Film Commission) did this puts Texas in a bad light,” says Trejo. “All the folks at the Alamo would be pretty mad right now…I’d like to know how (the TFC) felt the Texas Chainsaw Massacre portrayed Texas.”
Okay, so what does this mean for a sequel shoot in Texas? Remember, two weeks ago we learned the MACHETE 2 script is already written. Trejo has fun with it:
“I think Machete 2 might have to be done in Arkansas…It might be Machete Kills the Texas Film Commission.”
Somehow, given Rodriguez’s rebellious personality…my guess is, if they do shoot a sequel, they not only keep it in Texas, but take the sleaze and violence to a whole new extreme. At least we can hope that’s the case.
