Now that Kevin Smith is done filming RED STATE, the entire nation (well, a few hundred people) awaits word on where and when we’ll get to see this supposed game-changing horror film from the director of JERSEY GIRL and COP OUT. Slashfilm caught up with the man who makes airplane seats shudder and found out a little something about the plans for the movie’s distribution.
“Here’s something that’s not so much news as my stated intentions for RED STATE: if it gets into Sundance, my plan is to pick the RED STATE distributor right there – IN THE ROOM – auction style,” Smith said. “Might even bring up a professional auctioneer to make it fun and unintelligible. And if you’re a multi-millionaire who can’t make it to the first screening of RED STATE, fear not: maybe we’ll set up an eBay page for the post-screening bid-calling as well.”
Meanwhile, it turns out that director Richard Kelly has seen the film and spoke to Smith about it on the latter’s podcast. What did he have to say?
“I have never seen a filmmaker reinvent himself the way you just have. I won’t say anything else because I don’t want to spoil anything. It’s really really exciting. If the movie ends up playing at Sundance, I might actually come up to just see the audience’s response. I can not wait…”
If Kelly isn’t just blowing smoke, his reaction would jibe with the concept Smith has been floating out there all along: that RED STATE is a real-deal horror film without any trace of Smith’s usual misplaced smugness.
