Producers Michael Birnbaum and Jeremiah Chechik have optioned HOUSE OF NIGHT, a series of nine young adult novels by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. Supposedly, the stories take the vampire myth into Harry Potter territory; I guess the rest of us are all the dumber for not realizing you could probably print money by combining TWILIGHT and HARRY POTTER.

In the series, “vampyres” are accepted in society; they possess a genetic anomaly that manifests itself in some people at puberty. Vampyres are “marked” and sent to the House of Night, a school that offers training necessary to become an adult vampyre.

The story’s focus is Zoey Redbird, whose ordinary life is thrown into disarray when she becomes a vampyre and must change schools and enter a brand new world.

Evidently the series has been on the New York Times Best Seller list for 63 weeks.

Chechik directed NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION (still a classic), as well as the misbegotten feature-film version of THE AVENGERS (starring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman in a catsuit, below). More recently, he’s been a TV director, working on stuff like “Gossip Girl” and “Chuck”.
