Marcus Nispel’s CONAN has been an odd case thus far. I can’t quite tell if it’s going to be a cheap wannabe or the real deal. I’m still not even sold on Jason Momoa as the titular barbarian, but I dig the supporting cast (‘specially those lovely ladies) and can’t ignore the fact that production companies Nu Image and Millennium have given us a few gems recently, like RAMBO and THE EXPANDABLES. (Hell, throw in BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS while you’re at it.) We’ve been in the dark regarding the plans for the supernatural action-adventure, not exactly sure whether or not it was to be sold as a big-screen spectacle or a high-end direct-to-DVD item. Ah, but now we know…

CONAN has nabbed itself a 2011 release date, a crowded one at that: AUGUST 19th. The film will square off against FRIGHT NIGHT 3D and SPY KIDS 4… 3D. And in case you weren’t aware, CONAN is in 3D, so that’s three new releases hitting on the same day, all in 3D. Someone will blink and move in this scenario, right? (That’s not even mentioning the fact that the fifth FINAL DESTINATION film comes out a week later; that flick will be in 3D as well.)

Release date and 3D mania aside, CONAN has also received a new synopsis: To avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his Cimmerian village, Conan (Jason Momoa) goes on a quest to find and kill the sadistic warlord responsible. However, this warlord, Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang), is on his own quest to find an elusive young woman, Tamara (Rachel Nichols), the key to an enigmatic ritual of resurrection. When Conan abducts Tamara and uses her as bait, he is pursued by armies, besieged by monsters and led to a site of primeval magic and human sacrifice.

Sounds like fun! CONAN stars Jason Momoa, Rose McGowan, Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Ron Perlman, Leo Howard, Bob Sapp, Saig Taghmaoui, Nonso Anozie, Raw Lieba, Bashar Rahal and Katarzyna Wolejnio (pictured below). Get ready for it to hit next summer!
