Sweep for Universal, dark teen fantasy adapted from Cate Tiernan’s novels

This ought to make Ammon weep with joy…

From Alloy Entertainment, the teen-centric production company behind the CW’s “Gossip Girl” (aka Mr. Gilbert’s favorite TV program), comes the big-screen adaptation of Cate Tiernan’s SWEEP, a series of young adult fantasy novels about a 16 year old girl who learns she’s a blood witch.

Variety has it Universal is keen on distributing the film once completed, going so far as to assign Robert Nelson Jacobs (CHOCOLAT, EXTREME MEASURES) to adapt the novel. The first entry, BOOK OF SHADOWS, follows Morgan Rowlands, a teenage girl who learns she descended from an ancient and powerful line. Ultimately, she must decide whether to use her powers for good or evil.

Hmm, sounds like Harry Potter for the young ladies…

Naturally, anything regarding blood witches and the power of good vs. evil is gonna get some run ’round these parts, but given the producers involved and the screenwriter attached…I’m already crying foul on this one. Besides, anything about this bastard NOT reek of PG-13? in 3D no less?

Let’s hear what you’ve got though. Is this a project worth covering here at AITH or should we leave the CW horror fare for Ammon and his off days?

Give us your two cents!
