Our brothers in gore over at Dread Central are reporting some very big news indeed; they say that Danny Boyle, of course the director of the modern classic 28 DAYS LATER, is “planning” to return to the ranks of the rage-infected by sitting in the director’s chair for the third installment of the franchise. Let’s take it with a grain of optimistic salt for now. (Let’s also not forget that Boyle said something to this effect back in November of ’08.)

If true, it seems a very curious move by Boyle, who is now an honest-to-goodness A-list director, thanks to his Oscar-winning SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and his upcoming Awards darling 127 HOURS. That said, it would solidify Boyle as one of the cooler mofos working today, not to mention make the next “28” film a serious must-see.

Boyle had not strayed too far from the infected after 28 DAYS LATER; while Juan Carlos Fresnadillo helmed 28 WEEKS LATER, Boyle did some second-unit work on the flick; for example, he helped craft that brilliant finale to the opening sequence, depicting Robert Carlyle’s cowardly flight from the farmhouse. Great stuff.

Let’s wait and see if we hear more on this rumor. It’s important to note that Dread writes that Boyle plans on directing the next 28 movie (Months?), hence the door is still open for this to not happen, even if Boyle is indeed pondering the project.

28 DAYS LATER star Noamie Harris… could she return?
