Ya know, I got a chance to see Jack Messit’s MIDNIGHT MOVIE late one night, on my computer no less, with little expectation. Not sure how many of you know about this flick, or even seen it, but I will say I was pleasantly surprised by what unfolded before my eyes. A masterpiece? Nowhere close. A pretty entertaining gore-fest that manages to keep a one-setting location watchable? Definitely. Which is why it’s an honor of sorts to direct you towards the Original Motion Picture Score to the film, which features the music of Penka Kouneva. Scope it…

Kouneva, a venerated orchestrator whose work includes scoring HOSTEL, HOSTEL II, ANGELS AND DEMONS and Tim Burton’s 9 (among others) – wove an earnest composition for MIDNIGHT MOVIE with gentle piano in addition to dark string tremolos, brass textures, ambient electronics with heavy percussion and ethereal voices. For the vintage film featured in the storyline, THE DARK BENEATH, thin, high violins, bassoon, synth patches, and meandering chords for suspense are employed.
