Official logline emerges for Kevin Smith’s political horror flick Red State

RED STATE is a film that intrigues me on many levels. Not only does it mark a departure in terms of tone and genre for Kevin Smith, it also marks the return of him directing his own script (which he got away from with COP OUT). Add to that a relatively impressive cast of screen vets, including Michael Parks, Melissa Leo, Stephen Root and Dermot Mulroney – and you can see why we, or at least I, am so excited about the prospect. Smith recently offered a logline for RED STATE to the demons over at Bloody-D, and since the flick has been kept under tight wraps for awhile now, any news on this sucker is big news. Check it…

“In the film a group of kids encounter a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘extreme fundamentalism.'”

Not quite a full synopsis, but at least we do know the flick will indeed have some kind of religious overtones and the existence of whack-job extremists. Always an unsettling topic!

Also starring Kyle Gallner and Michael Angarano, Smith has slated a September 22nd shooting start for the flick.
