Watchmen producer Lloyd Levin lands rights to dark comic book series Mage

Yep…another day, another comic book series headed to the big screen!

Word out of Variety today claims super producer Lloyd Levin, of WATCHMEN and HELLBOY fame, has just locked rights to cinematically adapt Matt Wagner’s 15 issue ’80s comic series MAGE. Now how ’bout that?!?

About the project, for which he’s said to be very close to assigning a writer, Levin beamed: “It has always been a favorite book of mine. It’s one of the great untapped comic books from the ’80s renaissance that also spawned Watchmen and ‘Batman: Dark Knight.'”

For those in the know not, MAGE is a retelling of the legend of Camelot — and centers on Kevin Matchstick, an alienated young man who discovers he has superhuman abilities, gains a magic baseball bat and defeats the nefarious plans of a being called the Umbra Sprite.

Sounds solid enough, I suppose. I’m not the hugest fan of comic book movies, but a dude regulating with a magic baseball bat ain’t too awful. More interesting than the premise itself may be the fact that Zack Snyder, who has obvious ties with Levin and WATCHMEN, was attached to direct this film as far back as 2003. Wonder if Levin will grab his boy and get him to helm MAGE as well. I wouldn’t be shocked either way!

But what do you think? You familiar with MAGE in the first place? If so, you think it’ll make a decent flick? And what about Snyder, he the right man for the job in your eyes, or do you have to wait and see SUCKER PUNCH to be certain?
