Well, this is sure to divide the geek community something fierce: Via a press release sent out by Columbia Pictures, it’s been revealed that Len Wiseman (UNDERWORLD, LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD) is in final negotiations to direct the remake of TOTAL RECALL, which will be “contemporized”. We haven’t heard much on the RECALL front since last summer, when Kurt Wimmer was hired to write the screenplay. Now, it seems to have a director.
I’m not really in favor of remaking the film (big surprise) as I think the Paul Verhoeven version is pitch-perfect, with effects that, for the most part, still hold up. And who can really step into Arnold’s workboots? I just pray it isn’t Taylor Lautner…
Although he’s still in final negotiations, Wiseman speaks like a man who has the job. “I’ve always been fascinated with Philip K. Dick’s short story, and I’m excited at that prospect of diving even deeper into the type of world it evokes and the questions it asks.” Wiseman said in a statement. “I love that the most crucial mystery our character is trying to solve is the one of his own soul.”
Producer Neal Moritz said, “I have been trying for years to work with Len and fortunately we finally found a great project that he loves as much as we do. Len is terrifically talented and we know he is the right director to re-imagine Total Recall for a new generation of fans.”
Wimmer is still listed as the screenwriter. No start date has been announced yet, but obviously it’s revving up.
