Guillermo del Toro offers more details on his 3D Haunted Mansion!

Now that you’ve had a few days to soak it in, how does the idea of Guillermo del Toro heading a live action, 3D version of Disney’s HAUNTED MANSION sit with ya?!?

To those initially stoked, get ready to hike the fervor. For those a bit skeptical, get ready to open your mind. You see, del Toro recently chatted with MTV and dished a few details regarding his newest development, and they’re actually pretty encouraging. Peep it…

“The movie I see in my head of ‘Haunted Mansion’ is not what I believe anyone is imagining it would be. It’s not just a regular world with a haunted mansion plopped in the middle. I’m really thinking of a movie with a heightened reality, which is super designed, incredibly innovative, narratively and visually. When people think of ‘The Haunted Mansion,’ they think they know [what it’s about]. But I really want to push a lot of stuff that they have not seen ever.”

“We are taking sort of the core mythology [of the ride] that you can tap into and saying that there are many mansions around the world and they’re all part of a sort of web. The spider sitting at the center of the web is what the fans of ‘The Haunted Mansion’ would know by the nickname the Hatbox Ghost, which is a beautiful creature that was created but there’s a legend that it was discarded on the first day of the ride’s operation because it was too scary. I like that legend, but the reality is that the imagineers could not make the illusion work, so they took it out.”

A few things here. First off, I dig the hell out of that Hatbox Ghost story…if del Toro can somehow incorporate that into his film, that’d be pretty f*ckin’ cool. Secondly, I rocked a season pass to Disney Land last year, and know intimately the ins and outs of the Haunted Mansion attraction. I also know how, every October-December, the mansion is transformed into a NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS theme…so I wonder how that’ll play as well when it comes to the film. Considering all this, I’m actually confident del Toro may make something memorable if not truly scary. Guess we’ll see!
