Edgar Wright talks Ant-Man, calls it a high-concept genre film!

The last time we had a briefing on Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Marvel’s ANT-MAN, we learned the project is set for a 2011 start date. Now that Wright is out pimping and propping his newest tent-pole outing SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, dude caught up with Box Office and shed some shine on the status of the ANT. Check it…

When asked if making ANT-MAN naturalistic or more comedy-centric, Wright confessed:

“I haven’t actually started the second draft yet–I’m not going to be able to until this film [Scott Pilgrim] is out–but what we wrote for the first draft, and what Marvel really liked, is that it’s funny, but it’s a genre film. It’s about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it’s within another genre. His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we’ve all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different. I’m not really a multi-tasker–I haven’t done anything since Marvel liked our first draft.”

A high-concept genre film that tries to subvert our expectations of superhero lore? I can get down with that, for sure. How about y’all?

ANT MAN follows Biochemist Henry Pym, who discovers an unusual set of subatomic particles he labels “Pym particles”, creates a size-altering formula and tests it on himself. Reduced to the size of an insect, Pym has a dangerous encounter with ants in a nearby anthill. Shortly afterward, he constructs a cybernetic helmet that allows him to communicate with and control ants. Pym designs a costume and reinvents himself as the superhero Ant-Man, and defeats several KGB agents attempting to steal the formula for an anti-radiation gas.
