Like many cult classics of our generation, DONNIE DARKO suffers from the notorious “double-dip” syndrome. It’s a syndrome that doesn’t necessarily affect DONNIE DARKO, but rather all those around it. Its fans, in particular, seem the most affected by the disease, and only the studios seem to be coming out on top of the whole deal.
Case in point is the 47th Ultimate Edition of DONNIE DARKO, on glorious Blu-ray, promising to be the ultimate 2 disc edition of the film yet, including the theatrical and the director’s cut, as well as the following features:
Ok, so maybe it is the Ultimate Edition (and with Kevin Smith commentary, to boot!), but is it worth replacing your 46 other copies of DONNIE DARKO that you’ve been suckered into buying over the last few years? Maybe… maybe not. The new cover art is sure damn cool, so you gotta give it props for at least changing that up a bit.
The biggest flaw here is that this Blu-ray is only for the UK. No North American date has been set for this release. But for those in the UK looking to score, July 19th is the date you want to remember. Because.. you know.. that’s its release date.
Cool art, plenty of features, all on Blu-ray. Tough call, but one thing’s for sure… there will likely be yet another version released soon enough, so you gotta figure out if this is the copy you want, or one that’s even more ultimate?
