Anyone else still scratching their head over news today that David Fincher is diving 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA with Disney? Well, don’t get out the nail clippers just yet!
In a wonderfully odd bit of timing, The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog has released a bit of news today regarding another 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA film project to be set up at Fox through Ridley and Tony Scott’s production company, Scott Free. Not only that, word has come in that WANTED director Timur Bekmambetov is the frontrunner to helm the picture. Interesting shite!
But that’s not quite all! You see, CLASH OF THE TITANS co-scribe Travis Beacham has been tapped to ink the screenplay for Fox. You know what that means, expect to see underwater 3-dimensionality!
But whatever format Bekmembatov chooses to shoot in (if he decides to direct, that is), word also has it that the film will be set in the future, and that taking more of a sci-fi approach rather than a period one may prove most beneficial. Of course, one could argue there’s absolutely no benefit in directing the same property as one David Fincher!
And in case you’re wondering why the same flick is getting the once over by two separate studios simultaneously, note that 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA is public domain, which means anyone can adapt the Jules Verne classic if they so choose. It then comes down to battle of words between Beacham and Scott Z. Burns, who’s attached to write Fincher’s version of the film for Disney.
All crazy shite, huh guys? My money’s still with Fincher, although being setup at Disney sounds like it could hinder Fincher’s penchant for dark material. While I’d rather see Fincher’s version set up through Free Scott, there’s no telling if this Timur fella will follow through and actually direct himself. We’ve seriously had this guy attached to direct like 5 different projects in the last year, and none of them have come to fruition. The worth, again, is in the wait it seems.
But we wanna hear from y’all. Which version of 20,0000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA are you looking forward to more? Fincher’s at Disney or Bekmambetov’s at Fox? Which do you think we’ll produced first?
