Summer movie season is officially underway this week with the release of the behemoth IRON MAN 2, so it only seems fitting that, despite keeping his newest flick more roiled than a positive STD test, Chris Nolan finally breaks down and sheds a hard light on his newest skull-f*cking blockbuster. That’s right folks, the official plot synopsis for INCEPTION is in!

Let’s not waste any more time:

Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan directs an international cast in an original sci-fi actioner that travels around the globe and into the intimate and infinite world of dreams. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption.

One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming. This summer, your mind is the scene of the crime.

Damn, talk about being afforded the luxury of making the kind of film you want. THE DARK KNIGHT paved a golden road for Nolan to tell a new, original story on just as large a scale. In a day in age where every blockbuster is based on a toy line, videogame, comic book, pre-existing movie, novel, graphic novel, what have you…here’s a project born from the mind of one man. Chris Nolan. Even if I hated the premise and cast of INCEPTION, I’d feel obligated to see it on that basis alone. As it now stands, INCEPTION seems to be my most anticipated movie of the summer (PREDATORS & PIRANHA 3D are climbing).

So what do you guys think? Diggin’ the new plot-crunch? You feel it gives too much? Too little? And what about the name Dom Cobb, anyone else reminded of Bob Cobb, the maestro from “Seinfeld”?

INCEPTION is in theaters July 16th!
