Films being adapted into comics? Now there’s a role reversal!
But apparently that’s exactly what Dark Horse and Hammer Films plan on doing together in a new joint effort. According to Heat Vision, the two companies are uniting to create a series of comics and graphic novels based on Hammer’s films, mostly from their halcyon days of the 50s and 60s. Hammer’s recent resurgence will also allow for new releases to be adapted.
In fact, the first Hammer flick said to receive the comic book/graphic novel adaptation isn’t from Hammer’s vault of old-school horror. No, the first flick to get made over is LET ME IN, Hammer’s remake of the Swedish chiller LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. Marc Andreyko has been hired to write the initial comic, which “will incorporate some of the film’s characters and mythology with some fresh themes.”
About the new line, Dark Horse publisher Mark Richardson beamed: “The existing Hammer Films library represents some of the most exciting horror stories ever told. ‘Let Me In’ is easily one of the most chilling and exciting horror stories to come along in years and as we have learned time and time again, comics provides the perfect place to expand on the storyline.”
And there ya have it folks. Pretty radical if you ask me. In a time where every movie drone is clamoring for the use of 3D (conversion, reversion, shot in, etc.), here’s a pair of companies basically doing the opposite. Instead of adapting print into spectacle, Hammer and Dark Horse are going from spectacle back to print and illustration. I dunno, I kinda like it!
