The Danish madman known as Lars Von Trier is preparing his next rumination on a genre film with MELACHOLIA, an end-of-the-world disaster film. Let’s not expect Roland Emmerich-style pyrotechnics here; we saw what Von Trier’s version of a cabin in the woods horror movie looks like. (If you haven’t seen ANTI CHRIST… well, maybe it should stay that way.)

MELANCHOLIA has started to cast up, although instead of the previously rumored Penelope Cruz, we’ll get Kirsten Dunst in the unspecified lead role (Cruz is apparently committed to the 4th PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN flick). Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgaard, Stellan Skarsgaard and Udo Kier are all attached as well.

The film will begin shooting in Sweden this July, with a budget of around $8 million. Certainly curious to see what kind of misanthropic horrors the director has in store for us this time…
